Forming a New PTA Unit
PTA membership is open to anyone who believes in the Mission and Purpose of the National PTA. This includes parents, teachers, neighbors, relatives, businesses, and the community.
Anyone can take the first step towards organizing a local PTA unit. Contact the Iowa PTA Office for specific information about forming a PTA unit in Iowa.
A PTA unit can be formed in any community or school, pre-school through high school. In Iowa, a minimum number of members is required to form a local PTA unit and keep it in good standing. A charter is granted by the Iowa PTA after the local unit's bylaws have been approved and a copy of all the organizational information has been received by the Iowa PTA Office. Other than annual membership dues, there is NO CHARGE to become a PTA.
The Iowa PTA has developed a checklist to be used by the organizers of a new unit. Use this checklist to ensure that all steps necessary to organize a unit are followed.
